House Siding The Complete Homeowners Guide 2024

house siding styles

Learn how to choose siding that will be the best choice for your home based on durability, style, and maintenance requirements. If you have a comprehensive (or all-risk) policy, such as the home insurance policy offered by Square One, damage to your siding will be covered unless the peril is excluded. Check your policy or contact your insurance provider or broker to see which perils are excluded. Typical exclusions include damage from wear and tear (rotting wood, peeling paint) or from animals (raccoons, woodpeckers). You can install new siding over old siding if the old exterior is flat, tightly fastened, and in good condition. However, most reputable contractors will not install new siding over existing siding.

Corrugated Metals

However, you’ll want to use special care to ensure that you don’t damage or chip the surface. If you discover and stains caused by mold or mildew, these should be cleaned using a solution of one-part bleach and one-part water. Apply it to the affected area, allow it to soak for up to five minutes, and then rinse it to remove. When it comes to the cleaning of a stucco siding, there are a few different ways that you can go about it.

Using our proprietary cost database, in-depth research, and collaboration with industry experts, we deliver accurate, up-to-date pricing and insights you can trust, every time. The Masonite Corporation was the first to manufacture Masonite, hence the name. They no longer make siding, but other companies manufacture the material and still refer to it as Masonite. It’s fire- and insect-proof, won’t rot, and is easy to paint and clean.

Textured Facade

It doesn’t rust, and it comes in many colors and styles, so you can complement nearly any home. Aluminum siding can be fairly inexpensive, with costs starting as low as $2 – $4 a square foot. Like most metal sidings, however, it’s fairly easy to dent, especially if you opt for thinner panels. It can be painted, but if scratched, the galvanized coating can be removed, and the siding can rust. It’s also insect and moisture-resistant, as well as flame-retardant. It’s highly durable, lasting for 50 years or more, and comes in a range of styles.

While glass isn’t technically siding, it is a viable house exterior option if you have the budget. Just look at that room above that’s glass from floor to ceiling… it’s amazing. The ingredients are mixed in various proportions to produce a paste that hardens when dry. This characteristic helps to create a durable concrete home exterior. The only real disadvantage to note, other than the fact that engineered wood is not quite the real thing, is the fact that you can’t repaint or restain it. Though it’s in a class all of its own, many people compare fiber cement and vinyl side by side.

The planks are plain and uniform which gives the siding a subtle appearance. Not everyone likes this style, as it is very utilitarian, but it does work well in older neighborhoods. It’s made from a plastic called polyvinyl chloride, and its color goes straight through the material, rather than sitting on top like paint on wood. Vinyl siding was introduced in the 1950s as a lower-maintenance alternative to wood siding. Shakes install very similarly to shingles, on a wrapped and flashed home that’s been trimmed on the edges and around the windows. The bottom of the shakes should be installed roughly 6 inches up from the ground, with the shakes themselves installed at a bottom corner, nailed about half way up.

A batten, or narrow strip of wood, is then nailed over top of the gaps between boards. For more budget-conscious homeowners, there are metal or vinyl siding products available, both of which are good durable choices for a siding material. Vinyl is the more affordable choice, while metal might be a better option if you live in a region where there is any danger of wildfire. When deciding on siding, you'll find a range of colors, but the style of your house will influence what you choose. For example, classic colors look best on Colonial styles while pastels and brighter colors feel at home on Victorian houses.

The courses continue from an outside corner, in as well as up, before the final trim is applied. Shingles are installed on a wrapped and flashed home that has had trim applied to the edges and around the windows. The bottom of the shingles should be installed roughly 6 inches from the ground. The shingles themselves are installed at the bottom corner, nailed about halfway up. The first course is held in place with nails in the starter strip, which is designed to fit right into the first course above it. Each subsequent course is fitted to the one below, like a hardwood floor installation.

How much does vinyl siding cost?

If you’re considering fiber cement for your home, check out these suggested manufacturers for more information. White homes and farmhouse style are two of the most popular trends today. Aluminum needs to be refinished every 5–10 years, while steel that has been scratched needs to be sealed and/or painted to prevent it from rusting. Copper needs to be cleaned regularly with the right detergents to prevent it from developing a patina over time.

And, because the color is part of the material, dings and scratches don’t show. Routine cleaning with a brush and hose is all the maintenance this siding needs. Today’s newly built homes are available in a variety of styles and materials. Vinyl siding is long-lasting, low-maintenance and simple to put up. It comes in many hues and styles, making it an appealing choice for new homes. Regardless, the average cost of vinyl siding is anywhere from $3.50 to $8.00 a square foot.

If you are considering replacing the current vinyl siding on your home and want to recycle it, there may be facilities in your area. In many cases, your local landfill will serve as a pick-up point for vinyl siding, so you might consider calling them to find out if that is where it needs to go. LP was established in 1973 and has since grown to become an industry pioneer in engineered wood products.

And if the wood becomes water logged, it causes cracking of the stucco in those areas as well, which can lead to further repairs. While most log siding has trouble with the ends or trim, steel log siding can be trimmed in a few ways. This unique material is made of insulated steel, but made to look like authentic log siding. The key is to paint both the brick and the mortar together, which creates texture without breaking up the exterior. And if it does need repair such as repointing of the mortar, this can also be expensive. Faux brick or brick veneer is a thinner type of brick that can give you the same look for your home, but at a fraction of the cost.

Insulated panel systems, architectural panels, and facades for business and residential apartment blocks are among the products that they manufacture here. The vinyl product lines offered by RBP need very little maintenance and come with a guarantee that is valid for two lifetimes. In the field of construction, Alside brings more than 70 years of expertise to the table. This firm is currently a market leader in the production of vinyl construction goods and was the originator of the first residential baked enamel aluminum siding in 1947. Thanks to contemporary developments in technology, the construction sector has seen major changes in the materials used in the industry.

Fittingly then, a new exhibition from Cartier “Time Unlimited” opens tomorrow, December 7, and runs through December 22. On the eve of the opening, a Miami Art Week fete will toast the show and its Design District pop-up space. Open to the public through Dec. 22, the traveling exhibition occupies a temporary, three-story space at 45 NE 41st Street custom built to house displays dedicated to Cartier’s legacy as a watchmaker. While most watch lovers hardly need to be reminded of that legacy, the brand, which debuted Time Unlimited in Hong Kong a year ago, has set out to educate its scores of fans around the world who still think of the maison as first and foremost a jeweler.

Today, the Maison is renowned worldwide for its high end jewelry creations and watches, perfumes and prestige accessories - symbols of craftsmanship and elegance, quality and excellence. The shop in the Design District is the sole free-standing Cartier boutique in Miami. Walk tree-lined streets to dining, shopping or a salon appointment.

The show is divided into themes including Watchmaker of Shapes, Pioneering Spirit, Culture of Design, and Technique Serves Beauty. But the show isn’t just an exploration of glamor and wrist glitz; it’s a study and celebration of the art and intricacies of watchmaking. Upon entering the exhibition, visitors will discover Cartier’s reputation as “the watchmaker of shapes,” a reference to its track record of producing distinctive wristwatches in daring forms. Museum-style vitrines showcase shaped pieces that belong to both the current range and the Cartier Collection, an archive of designs that serves as a material record of the brand’s 170-year history of creativity and experimentation. The six-foot-tall artwork features the brand’s signature panther prowling through a swirling landscape of intense blues, browns, and greens. “It’s a pattern that reminds me of the flowers everywhere in the village,” Viagbo says. The trendsetting shops are ideal for creative inspiration.

The show is the perfect luxury jaunt for both the jetlagged jet-set of European and Asian art collectors, stateside watch aficionados, or just anyone who appreciates peak design from a storied heritage house. It includes the Maison’s most iconic timepieces, such as the Santos de Cartier, Baignoire, Panthère de Cartier, Ballon Bleu, and Tank. The ever-trending Crash (originally produced in 1967), which inspired the exhibition logo, seems to reference Salvador Dalí’s famous melting clocks in The Persistence of Memory—fabulously.

13 Modern Siding Ideas for a Contemporary Home

house siding styles

The different types of sidings include natural wood siding, lap siding, drop channel siding, tongue and groove siding, and shingle siding, which are along the more common types. The installation process will differ depending on the type of siding that you choose. One of the easiest sidings to install and maintain, vinyl siding can be a good option if you’re on a limited budget. Here are a few vinyl siding color options that will always stay in style.

C. DIY or Professional Installation?

Though dioxin is greatly controlled by the EPA, it has been linked to a number of diseases such as heart disease and even cancer. In general, today’s manufacturing of plastic products can present hazardous environments for those that live and work in industrial areas where they are engineered. To create tongue-and-groove siding, the planks are milled with a groove on one of their long edges, and then a “tongue” on its other long edge. As opposed to drop siding, tongue-and-groove planks interlock to create a smooth finish, with no overlap. This home uses a mix of black, white, and gray to great effect, creating a monochromatic appearance that’s beautiful to see.

Exterior House Siding Ideas

As far as sustainability goes, both plastic and cement are not sourced from sustainable materials, but they may be recyclable. In this case, stone veneer siding may not consist of stone at all. When surrounded by trees or atop a hill, there is something very majestic and nostalgic about a stone house.

These panels can be installed in different ways, depending on the manufacturer. They may be glued down to a wrapped and trimmed home, or they may nail down with overlapping edges to hide the joins. Manufactured stone veneer is sometimes called stone veneer siding, and doesn’t actually contain stone. If you want the look of stone for less, along with better control over the color and appearance, you can use manufactured stone siding to great effect. It’s therefore slightly less expensive, and usually more uniform in terms of size and shape.

The brick itself has a lot of subtle color variation between the pieces, which helps create a random pattern over its surface. This helps give a lot of depth to the design, without needing to use a lot of different colors or details to do so. The texture of the siding works well with the brick on the front walk and the fieldstone used around the landscaping.

Fiber cement is sometimes referred to as Hardie board, a major manufacturer of fiber cement products. Some fiber cement siding can be ordered with a factory-applied primer or primer and finish coat, along with a 15-year warranty against fading, chipping, peeling, or cracking. Special tools, safety precautions, and installation details are required to get a fiber cement siding job done correctly; it’s not a DIY-friendly material.

Whether you’re embarking on a brand new build or remodeling an older home, few things can immediately increase your home’s curb appeal like new siding. With so many materials, styles and other options to choose from, narrowing down your selections can be a bit tricky. Here, our friends at LP Building Solutions share a few trends in exteriors to get you started. Vinyl siding combines reliability, price, and convenience but may not have the desired appearance you’re looking for.

A. Additional siding considerations. This stuff costs a ton so make your decision carefully

Elegant, timeless and suitable for new or historic homes, natural wood siding continues to be one of the most popular options. The material can also be fashioned into architectural panels well-suited to contemporary homes or board-and-batten siding, ideal for the popular farmhouse look. Fiber cement is made of wood pulp mixed with Portland cement as a binder. It pairs the perks of masonry with the aesthetic appeal of painted wood. Fire-, moisture- and pest-resistant and easy to maintain, fiber cement siding can be painted any color.

How to Choose the Best Siding for Your House

On the other hand, brick cladding is more expensive than other types of siding and the bricks must be laid by a professional. In addition, the structure of the house must be able to support the bricks’ weight. The kind, quality and maintenance of your house’s siding is crucial for the appearance, comfort, and enjoyment of your home. Since the siding is one of the first lines of defense for your house against the elements, it’s in your interest to make sure you have the right type of siding for your climate. Masonite is a composite material made with wood fibers, wax, resin, and binders.

You don’t need to use a neutral on your house siding to get a subtle, understated look. This forest green home has just enough color to be interesting, but still has a traditional, classic style and look. To help you narrow your choices, here are the most common home siding options available when building or renovating. Vinyl siding is almost always the least expensive way to side your home. Cement fiber siding is an especially popular choice in areas that experience extreme weather, such as hurricanes, blizzards, or wildfires.

Engineered wood holds up well to extreme temperatures, moisture, fire and insects. It requires little maintenance and suffers very little from normal wear and tear. Also of note is that stucco is best only for warm, dry environments with minimal rainfall. It’s not the best material for areas that receive a lot of rain or that have high humidity.

If installing horizontal lap siding, each course installs from the bottom up, with the top courses overlapping those below. It can be nailed directly to the substrate over a wrapped and trimmed exterior. The cost of fiber cement siding can vary a lot depending on the manufacturer and the style and type of siding you choose. It can range from $4 to $7 a square foot on average, with some premium products costing as much as $10 a square foot. It’s often thicker than standing seam or plank metal siding, so it can last longer with no worrying about dents.

The texture and color variation in the stone gives the home a durable and old fashioned appearance. Stone siding works beautifully with a wide range of other siding styles and materials. This type of lap siding has overlapping edges with a channel between them. The two materials together create a very modern, yet natural look for the home. This home features a drop channel wood siding section on a home that is otherwise clad in limestone.

Polyurethane is a less commonly used material for creating stone siding. It’s made from  a type of plastic foam, so it’s lightweight yet durable as well as easy to install. It goes up in panels, so installation is often quick and easy as well. It’s lightweight and goes up in large panels at once, so installation takes less time than other styles, and it often costs less as well. The material doesn’t feel like stone and has a lot less variation than stone, so it won’t look quite as authentic, but it works well for small areas. Natural stone cladding is natural stone, but cut into thinner, more uniform pieces.

Some locales require wood siding be treated with fire-retardant chemicals. Over the last 50 years, vinyl has been the most common siding material in the U.S., based on data from the American Housing Survey, conducted by the U.S. Credit the material's low cost, lightweight design which makes for easy installation and minimal maintenance, including the fact that it doesn’t need to be painted. Though vinyl's use in new construction peaked around the turn of this century, it’s still used on about a quarter of new homes, and it remains a popular choice with remodelers. The type of siding you choose depends on your budget and the amount of noise you want to reduce.

Because it’s installation is labor intensive, and the process of making bricks is involved, brick tends to be more expensive than other material options. Buildings and homes alike have been constructed of this material, but as time went on and cost went up it was used less as a structural material and more as a design covering. Here a combination of board and batten and stucco is used to create a charming cottage look. Available in wood and fiber cement, board and batten highlights a houses vertical attributes, making homes appear taller.

32 New Ships Set to Cruise in 2022

new cruise ships 2022

Instead, there are 20+ dining options that are all included in the cruise fare. Wonder of the Seas will set sail from a new homeport of Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 4, 2022. Then, she will make her way to Barcelona and Rome in May for a summer season in the Mediterranean.

What are the best cruise lines of 2024 for every traveler?

This additional space offers cruisers the opportunity to get closer to the ocean, while enjoying some unique experiences found only on Norwegian Prima. For instance, there’s the Concourse, an outdoor sculpture garden, and two Oceanwalk glass walkways. Completing the 2022’s orderbook, the vessels are set to debut for different brands, including Carnival, P&O, Viking and MSC – who is receiving two new vessels in time for the winter season. "Most lines no longer have pretesting guidelines or vaccine requirements," Editor-in-Chief of Cruise Critic Colleen McDaniel told the outlet. For those who prefer something tropical during the holidays, Greek family-owned Variety Cruises goes beyond the Cyclades to offer an eight-day jaunt through the Caribbean. Aboard the megayacht Panorama, cruisers can experience an island hop that goes from Barbados to Grenada, to include such jaw droppers as the Piton Mountains in St Lucia and diminutive, glimmering Canouan.

Viking Mars and Viking Neptune Continue Viking Oceans' Expansion

The long-delayed Evrima is the first ship from startup line The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, a new luxury cruise line from The Ritz-Carlton. Wildlife enthusiasts will get incredible views from the onboard high-definition Cineplex camera to capture wildlife from up to four miles away. The camera streams the footage to the Discovery Center for passengers to view while leaving the wildlife undisturbed. Discovery Princess is the sixth and final Royal-class ship for Princess Cruises and the third designed for MedallionClass. Virgin Voyages will continue to grow its fleet in 2022 with its third ship, Resilient Lady.

Silversea's Silver Dawn Debuts New Roman-Inspired Otium Spa and Wellness Program

The adults-only Quiet Cove will introduce the cruise line's first infinity pool, while grown-ups will be the only ones allowed to dine at Enchante, the line's new onboard restaurant designed by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement. The World Europa will also feature an aft infinity pool, along with 6 other pools and 14 hot tubs. The pool deck will also feature a family sundeck and Aquapark, which integrates virtual reality technology and plenty of water slides! After a day at the pool deck, cruisers can enjoy an English-style pub that serves beer made in-house on the ship.

Another reason that Ritz-Carlton lovers are excited -- Evrima is part of the Marriott Bonvoy program, and members will be able to redeem points for the ship’s first sailings in October 2022. The Ritz-Carlton yacht will spend its first season in the Mediterranean before heading the Caribbean. Carrying 2,770 passengers, the ship will be an adults-only cruise and have a similar design and attitude to Scarlet Lady (which won the Cruise Critic's Editors' Picks award for Best New Cruise Ship of 2021). Valiant Lady will sail in the Mediterranean, and we're excited to see how Virgin's hip and quirky approach to cruising works in Europe (nights in Ibiza, anyone?). Celebrity Beyond will also introduce the Magic Carpet, which is the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform that lifts guests 13 stories above sea level.

As if launching MSC Seascape in 2022 wasn’t enough, MSC Cruises is dreaming even bigger with an all-new class of ship. MSC World Europa will carry 5,079 passengers (at full occupancy) and will boast 22 decks, immediately becoming the longest, tallest and largest ship in the entire fleet. The ship launches in December 2022 and is earmarked to sail in the Arabian Gulf. The third of Celebrity’s Edge series, Celebrity Beyond will launch in Spring 2022 and sail European itineraries before moving to the Caribbean for winter. Celebrity Beyond is expanding its outdoor space to be 40% larger than the main decks on the other Edge series ships. Joining our list of new vessels launching in 2022 is Princess Cruise Line’s newest ship, Discovery Princess.

new cruise ships 2022

Following the seven ships that have already been delivered, ten additional newbuilds are set to enter service by the end of the year. Fincantieri will be the busiest shipyard in 2022, with six ships set to delivered between the second and the fourth quarter of the year. The new exploration ship will also be home to 26 expedition guides, including scientists, historians, and naturalists who provide regular educational lectures and lead guided tours. Cruisers can also enjoy world-class cuisine from Michelin-star chefs throughout their voyage. Discovery Princess will also introduce a new live jazz bar called Take Five, a craft cocktail venue and a comedy club.

Each night, my stateroom attendant replenished towels and brought flyers and schedules for the next day.

MSC World Europa is the first World-class ship for the cruise line, with three more on the way in 202, 2025, and 2027. The vessels are powered by LNG technology which produces lower carbon emissions than traditional diesel engines. In addition, MSC World Europa will have six pools, fourteen hot tubs, an 11-story slide, and an Aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate with virtual reality technology. The new voyages will be aboard the MS Spitsbergen, which Hurtigruten says is one of its most popular ships. It's fitted with Scandinavian touches, like sleek design elements and an onboard sauna, as well as a fully staffed expedition team that offers daily lectures.

Odyssey of the Seas is now sailing the Caribbean on 6-8 night itineraries. At the end of April 2022, the ship will reposition to Europe to offer exciting itineraries to Greece and the Holy Lands. Finally, the ship will transition to Florida once again sailing the Caribbean beginning in November 2022. Speaking of dining, Scarlet Lady breaks the mold when it comes to traditional cruise dining.

The yacht will then move to the Mediterranean and sail into small Croatian and Greek ports, as well as itineraries that focus on Italy and France. Carnival Cruise Line turns 50 in 2022, and the line is leaning into the festivities with its next Excel Class ship, Carnival Celebration. Set to debut with a 14-night transatlantic cruise departing Southampton on November 6, 2022, Carnival Celebration will homeport out of Miami when it arrives Stateside.

Some ships that were set to launch in 2022 have subsequently been pushed back to 2023. The adults-only ship features spaces very nearly identical to those featured on Viking Star. Viking Cruises has found a formula that works for the brand, and they’ve stuck with it, adamantly. The ship will also offer MSC Cruises’ largest water park yet, with VR-enabled water slides.

We keep track of the larger cruise ships under construction in our story below. Similar to Viking’s ocean ships, this vessel will have an infinity plunge pool, so guests can take a dip while enjoying the scenic views. These include the Explorers’ Lounge, the Living Room, the Restaurant (Viking’s main dining room), and the Aquavit Terrace.

The new feature on Wonder of the Seas that we are perhaps the most excited about is The Vue. The Vue is a cantilevered bar offering panoramic ocean views from high above on the pool deck. Disney Wish is the 5th ship in the cruise line’s fleet and the first LNG ship for the brand. For the first time, the artwork on the bow of the ship will feature Captain Minnie Mouse. This artistic princess will be decorating the exterior of the ship with the help of her chameleon pal, Pascal.

While the kids play in the pirate-themed water park, walk the long promenade that wraps around the 1,100-foot ship, meant to feel like a stroll through a seaside town. Its New York-inspired design includes a 9 1/2-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty in the casino, as well as a three-story Times Square, an entertainment and shopping area, with a 28-foot-high projection of the Manhattan skyline. On this Princess ship, you’ll easily find space to turn to mush (or completely veg out) when looking at the sea. The 3,560-passenger Enchanted Princess has 10 hot tubs, more than on any other Princess ship. The redesigned pool deck also encourages time in the sunny outdoors, or in the shade, in a top-deck bar and in two deep-tank pools linked by sunken seating. At the ship’s aft end, take in spectacular views of the horizon at another swimming spot, the Wakeview Pool.

This exclusive ship within a ship concept will span four decks with unparalleled sea views, offering a private pool, restaurant, and lounge. Guests will also find the lively Caribbean pool deck on Wonder of the Seas. Celebrity Beyond is the third ship in Celebrity Cruises popular Edge Class of ships. When Celebrity Beyond debuts in April 2022, she will be longer, taller, and more luxurious than her sister ships, Celebrity Edge and Apex. With a 20 meter stretch and 1 deck taller, the ship will feature targeted increases in space for a feeling of more openness. The new year will see 32 new cruise ships debut, made up of 25 new ships on the cruise ship orderbook for 2022, plus an additional seven vessels that were built in 2021 and are expected to enter revenue service this year.

Chief among the changes is a re-imaging of Celebrity's wellness program, led by actress and lifestyle maven Gwyneth Paltrow (who is now also the line’s Well-Being Advisor). New suites are being added in AquaClass and The Retreat -- Celebrity's resort for suite passengers -- is 40 percent larger than on other ships. Celebrity Beyond will also have the first fine-dining restaurant at sea from Michelin-star chef Daniel Boulud.

Princess Cruises delays new ship, cancels 9 cruises

The Grand Hall will set the stage for cruisers as they first step onboard Disney Wish. It will feature a bronze statue of Cinderella, a grand staircase, a starry chandelier, and a bit of pixie dust. The ship’s inaugural season will take place in Northern Europe visiting popular ports in the Baltic region and Norwegian Fjords. She will then transition to North America offering a variety of cruises from New York, Galveston, Miami, and Port Canaveral. Norwegian Prima will set sail in August of next year, and she will certainly be one of the best new cruise ships for 2022.

Virgin Voyages Brilliant Lady

This 142,500 gross tons ship will be the “Industry’s Most Spacious New Cruise Ship” when she debuts. The 3,099-person capacity vessel, which boasts a 24-hour butler service and three-level race track, was just named the best new cruise ship of 2022 in the Ocean category, CNN Travel reports. This year marked the return of the annual awards ceremony, which took a hiatus during a tumultuous few years for the industry. The cruise ship is also hoping to be ‘the most spacious ship at sea’ with the most outdoor deck space of any ship at sea. Prima will also have the largest suite variety of any Norwegian ship at sea. While much of Celebrity Beyond’s elements are familiar, there are many notable changes to several areas around this 3rd Edge-Class ship. Guests will appreciate the expanded Rooftop Garden, that now features cantilevered float pools. The all-new Moroccan inspired Sunset Bar with tiered seating and an aft location to really appreciate the views. The Retreat Sundeck, the exclusive resort-within-a-resort area for suite guests, has been expanded with two levels of luxurious bliss.

Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas

Staterooms feature modern appointments, and the rock-star suites are over the top. While there will be an emphasis on healthy cruising, with complimentary fitness classes, you’ll still be able to indulge at the over 20 included dining venues. Speaking of inclusions, how about free gratuities, Wi-Fi, filtered water and sodas. Holding just 298 passengers, Evrima will be a small, yacht-like vessel with an elegant, residential look (as you might expect for Ritz-Carlton).

This venue will feature an exclusive collection of world-class rock performances nightly. Of course, there is also the 270-degree surround-screen World Stage, elevating main theater entertainment to the next level. Debuting on Quantum Class ships, this largest and most revolutionary indoor space at sea yet is home to bumper cars, a sports court, XBox gaming, and more. Ripcord by iFLY is a 60-second hair-raising skydiving simulator that is free on port days. Finally, North Star is an observation capsule that rises 300 feet above sea level for extraordinary panoramic views.

For just $89 per day, you can live on a cruise ship and sail the world

Boutique river cruise line Uniworld is bringing its newest ship, Mekong Jewel, to its namesake waterway for 13-day voyages through Vietnam and Cambodia. The itineraries begin sailing in September 2022 with stops including Ho Chi Minh City and the villages of Tien Loi, Vinh Long, and Sa Dec in Vietnam, and Cambodia's Phnom Penh and the ancient temples of Angkor Wat. In the past few years, American Cruise Lines has revamped the expectation of what riverboats on U.S. rivers should look like by introducing a more modern style of ship. These ships do not have paddlewheels; instead, the 175-passenger vessels look more like a hotel on land with a four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship. ACL ships are known for having some of the largest cabins in river cruising, with most ranging from 250 to 650 square feet.

Viking Mars (Viking Cruises)

The line says aspects of the ship's design and onboard experience will be specifically tailored to appeal to passengers from North America, including 13 dining venues (six will be specialty restaurants) and 20 bars and lounges. The family market will continue to be the focus for MSC Cruises, with elaborate waterparks, a SportsPlex and rollerskating arena, and an 11-story drop dry slide. While no further details have been released, the ship will most likely feature similar amenities as her sister MSC World Europa, which include a new microbrewery, gin bar, healthy juice bar, coffee emporium, and teahouse. Brilliant Lady will be identical to her three sister ships -- Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady - offering 86 percent balcony cabins and 78 suites called Rockstar Quarters. There will be more than 20 eateries onboard, ranging from steaks and seafood to vegetarian, a test kitchen, Mexican, and a Korean Barbeque, all of which are complimentary.

Disney Wish will feature an all-new theatrical experience in a Frozen-themed restaurant, complete with musical performances from Anna and Elsa. Cruisers will also love the worldly menu that’s inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the Avengers Quantum Encounter. This immersive, technological experience will take guests on an action-packed mission while taking also taking their taste buds on an adventure of their own. Virgin doesn’t need to grab for attention the way some of the older cruise lines do, as it’s still young enough to attract cruisers looking for a new experience without adding flashy “biggest at sea” features. The ship also will boast The Drop, a 10-story dry slide that the line says will provide more G-force than an accelerating F1 racecar.

After sailing some introductory sailings in March & April, Valiant Lady’s inaugural season will feature 7 night Mediterranean itineraries departing from Barcelona, Spain, followed by a 14 night transatlantic voyage to Miami. From Port Miami, Valiant Lady will sail 5-8 night Caribbean itineraries though April 2023, each with a stop at Virgin Voyages’ exclusive Beach Club at Bimini. Like the four earlier Oasis Class ships, it will be 18 decks high and nearly 1,200 feet long — the equivalent of more than three football fields.

This class of ships features an adult-only environment with plenty of places to dine and drink. Virgin's ships will continue to forgo the traditional main dining room and instead offer multiple restaurants and specialty dining options for cruisers to enjoy. After making a big splash with the debut of Mardi Gras, Carnival Cruise Line’s second Excel-class ship Carnival Celebration will keep the excitement going as one of the most-anticipated new cruise ships for 2022.

And the restaurants onboard serve elegant cuisine created in partnership with leading American chef Thomas Keller. The 140,000 gross ton Disney Wish is slightly larger than the last two Disney cruise ships (Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy). Inside the ship, you will find specialty restaurants, bars, lounges, shopping, a massive casino, Broadway shows, ice-skating, a handcrafted merry-go-round, and so much more. Many new ships are arriving months, and in some cases, years behind schedule as shipyard delays and the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in many new cruise ships being pushed back to 2022.

A new water feature combines cinema with water slides, and new tech-heavy indoor experiences allow for interactive family fun. Celebrity Beyond is the third ship in Celebrity’s Edge Series, building on all of the successful components that cruisers loved in past Edge ships, with even more to enjoy. Along with these amazing features, MSC World Europa will be the line’s first vessel to be powered by liquified natural gas. Carnival favorite food spots like BlueIguana Cantina, Guy’s Burger Joint, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse|Brewhouse, SeaFood Shack and more are back, joined by venues launched on Mardi Gras like Shaq’s Big Chicken, Street Eats and Chibang. Carnival Celebration will not be an exact copy, as new venues and tweaked experiences have been promised.

Known for intimate sailings, cultural itineraries, and affable staff, Variety brings some Greek storge to every trip. Norwegian Prima still boasts some incredible amenities and entertainment options despite its smaller size. The ship features The Drop, a 10-story slide that the cruise line says provides more g-force than an accelerating F1 car. If that isn’t enough, the ship has a go-kart track that spans three decks, a first for any cruise ship. When it debuts in November, World Europa will be based in Doha, Qatar, for the FIFA World Cup, and then set out for seven-night voyages through the Middle East in December. Stops include Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the UAE island of Sir Bani Yas, and the Al Ahsa Oasis in Saudi Arabia.

As on Viking Octantis, passengers on Seabourn Venture will be able to explore the world under the water in polar regions as well as what's above the waterline. Disney Wish is just the first of three new "Triton Class" ships that Disney Cruise Line has on order for delivery over the next few years — an expansion that will nearly double its size when measured by passenger capacity. If it does (and we're sure hoping so), it'll be a notable event in the cruise world, marking the entry of one of the luxury hotel world's most famous brands into cruising. In another first for polar expedition cruise vessels, every cabin on the vessel has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.

Explore more on your Europe cruise by both land and sea in one seamless European trip; plan an authentic vacation that goes beyond the expected. The idea of the “best” ship is subjective, but the biggest and newest ship is Norwegian Encore, which debuted in 2019. Norwegian will be introducing the new Leonardo class of ships in 2022.

Norwegian Cruise Line Is About to Make Veggie Fans Very, Very Happy

The biggest two of them, on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, are nearly 1,400 feet long and sprawl over three decks. There are also Howl at the Moon dueling piano bars on some Norwegian ships, and there's the lively Q Texas Smokehouse found on Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy (a music-and-food concept that pairs live music with barbecue). Norwegian's 10 smaller vessels break down among five classes, but many are roughly the same size and offer similar amenities. Explore more on your Central American or South American cruise by both land and sea in one seamless trip; from ancient civilizations to dramatic vistas of rushing waterfalls, Central & South America cruises make an impression.

Watch the ocean blur by as you zoom around curves suspended 13 feet over the side of the ship on Norwegian Speedway, the largest race track at sea. Bring the secrets of the past to life in the lost city of Atlantis, where laser tag meets augmented reality. Tucked away in the middle of the ship, this "studio" zone is essentially a private escape for solos, with more solo cabins — 128 — than you'll find on any other ship at sea. Over the years, I've sailed on all but three of Norwegian's 19 vessels, and my personal favorite is Norwegian Prima.

Inside, you'll find activities that range from trivia, bingo and Deal or No Deal during the day to song-and-dance revues or Broadway shows in the theater and live music or cabaret shows in the evening. There's also an always-busy casino, which opens when the ship is out to sea. There's no formal dress code at night either, though most people do change into something slightly less casual for dinner. Additionally, some of the specialty extra-fee restaurants do require long pants, collared shirts and closed-toe shoes. Most evenings you'll see men in dark jeans or khakis and collared shirts, and women in blouses with slacks or skirts, or sundresses. Don't be surprised if you see people in shorts in the main dining rooms.

You'll find a decent number of people from other English-speaking countries, and smaller numbers from South America and Europe. On European cruises, North Americans still dominate but you'll find more people from the United Kingdom and other European countries. One ship, Norwegian Joy, was designed specifically for the Asian market, and the vast majority of passengers on this ship will be from China. You'll find an exclusive, extra-charge, adults-only VIP sunning area on seven Norwegian ships called Vibe Beach Club. The biggest of these areas is on Norwegian Encore, where Vibe Beach Club is an expansive private lounge with a full-service bar, cabanas and two hot tubs designed to hold up to 270 people — far more than on other ships. Like the ships of the Breakaway and Breakaway-plus classes, the Prima Class ships have a lively zone that mixes casino space, bars, eateries and entertainment that sprawls across decks 6, 7 and 8.

At 169,116 tons, it's bigger than all but three Carnival ships. Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have significantly more bigger vessels. Smaller only than Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, the brand has become increasingly known for having some of the biggest, most amenity-filled vessels at sea. More than half of its fleet is comprised of vessels that, by today's standards, are considered almost midsize. Norwegian Cruise Line isn’t totally all-inclusive, but it’s close. Each ship will have numerous restaurants to eat at that are included in your fare.

The currency used on all Norwegian itineraries is U.S. dollars. All vessels operate on a cashless system with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Norwegian vessels recently was priced at $39.99 per person per day, if you bought it in advance. Norwegian also offers a less expensive plan that doesn't allow video streaming for $29.99 per person per day if purchased in advance. What you'll find on the top decks of Norwegian ships will vary quite a bit depending on the vessel.

Australia & New Zealand Cruises

Norwegian Sun is also one of the smallest and least kid-focused of the five ships the line deploys to Alaska in summer, making it a good choice for retirees wanting to visit that destination. Families with kids naturally gravitate to the two giant, activity-packed vessels Norwegian sends to Alaska each summer — Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss. The sailings in and out of Buenos Aires and Melbourne, all on the longer side, will offer in-depth explorations of the southern half of South America (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile) and New Zealand, respectively. Over the next two years, for instance, Norwegian Sun is sailing lots of long voyages out of such less-common home ports as Benoa, Indonesia; Melbourne, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Papeete, Tahiti. Norwegian Sun's top deck mostly comprises sunning areas, with a single pool and whirlpools, as is typical for ships built more than two decades ago. Norwegian Epic was the first Norwegian ship with an exclusive solos zone, and it was such a hit the line later added them to eight more vessels.

Dine, dance, laugh, and relax with onboard activities, premier entertainment, and unforgettable shore excursions. Start with a hot-stone massage, one of over 50 specialty treatments offered by our well-trained massage therapists. Then unwind in the Thermal Suite with a steam or a dip in the Vitality Pool.

Sway to the gentle sea breeze as you relax on a hammock at Indulge Outdoor Lounge. Or get into a livelier groove as you enjoy a craft cocktail while listening to live music at The Local Bar & Grill. Experience the sublime colorful architecture of these breezy, tropical ports. Starlink provides fast Internet service at sea and is now available on Norwegian Viva. Welcome to a place where the ocean meets the healing waters within — the breathtaking new Mandara Spa. From multiple detoxifying saunas to state-of-the-art pools to a two-story waterfall, the experience on Norwegian Viva will awaken every sense.

See all the onboard offerings, and be among the first to try them during the inaugural sailings at ncl.com. Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet consists of 19 ships that come in a wide range of sizes and feature differing mixes of venues and activities. Some are jampacked with fun zones that make them perfect for families, while others are geared toward couples and retirees. Some ships have attributes that make them stand out for luxury, solo or budget travelers. Notably, the public areas that include these restaurants feel more spacious than many of the other ships in the Norwegian fleet.

You might even find Starbucks stores on some ships (the one-year-old Norwegian Prima has two!) and there are Starbucks products on every Norwegian vessel. Also, some ships have private restaurants just for passengers staying in The Haven. On some ships, you'll also find Ocean Blue, a seafood restaurant; The District Brew House, a gastropub serving craft beers; and a Mexican spot called either Los Lobos or Los Lobos Cantina. Every vessel has some sort of sushi restaurant, often called Sushi or Wasabi, and there are hibachi-style teppanyaki restaurants on nearly every Norwegian vessel. The Garden Villas also have private outdoor sun decks and courtyards with hot tubs.

Our award-winning ships are designed for you to enjoy as you choose while cruising to beautiful destinations around the world. Add a wide range of superb dining options and spectacular entertainment and you’ll experience your best vacation ever. And it happens to be right next to the Whiskey Bar, so you can always head over for a flight there too.

You'll find plenty of young families onboard Norwegian ships, especially during holidays and school breaks. However, the line's newest ship, Norwegian Bliss, is less family-friendly than the line's other ships, with all the kids clubs on the lowest levels of the ship and onboard entertainment that is decidedly adult. Cruise Critic's Deal Score will help you find the best deals on your favorite cruise line. By combining our extensive price data with upgrade details, onboard credits, itineraries, and more, you're able to quickly and clearly see just how much money you're going to save on your next cruise. Maybe you'll find your second cruise line of choice -- deals on luxury lines like Azamara and Regent Seven Seas are just a few of the bargains you might find.
